The process:
This book was really special to illustrate. I started with a character study and the scenes developed from there. I created Triton's tail to represent freedom and the idea was for it to be very present on the pages. This helped us create the basic layout as well. Regarding the color palette, I thought of the bottom of the sea as a magical place, full of brightness and light, so that the pages wouldn't be dark. This helped represent each of the elements in a more playful way and give more depth to the scenes.
